Despite being released in 2010, Mafia 2 is still an excellent game and worth playing even today, perhaps even more so than Mafia 3.
In 2010 it received a sequel in the form of Mafia 2 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.. At first glance, the unfamiliar viewer could potentially call it a GTA clone but I think Mafia 2 is something else, something special, something that’s worth playing ten years on, for a multitude of reasons, even after the release of Mafia 3.. Due to Mafia 2 taking place in two different decades you can see how America changed, from the cars roaming the streets, to the music on the radio, to the clothes people drape themselves in.. The time period also plays its part in the narrative, as the opening sees Vito Scaletta (the protagonist) fighting in the Second World War.. What follows is a story that focuses on the rise of a gangster within a mafia family which runs on honour and loyalty.. But what keeps me thinking about Mafia 2’s story is how it ties into the gameplay (some story points will be spoiled, so feel free to come back later if you wish).. You feel the wealth and power Vito now has much more after playing through Vito’s earlier life.
Underneath all of its problems--and despite a less than stellar re-release--Mafia 2 remains oddly compelling.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition , the new version of the 2010 game available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, opens with a message that primed me for a game that might not have held up well.. "Mafia II: Definitive Edition presents the game's narrative content in its original form from 2010.. Mafia II was never the most sensitive game, and in 2020 the "culturally sensitive content" made me squirm more than it might have 10 years ago.. Mafia II condemns the mafia lifestyle, and the actions of these men, but when women exist in the game largely to throw themselves at men (or as centerfolds in the game's collectable Playboy magazines), it doesn't provide much of a counterpoint to these retrograde perspectives.. Mafia II tells the tale of Vito Scaletta, a young World War II vet who becomes ensconced in the world of organized crime after witnessing the power of a mafia boss while fighting in Italy.. For all the game's occasional bluster, this is why Mafia II endures--because so much of it is strangely low-key.. Even the game's largely empty open world, which was criticized at the time for offering little in the way of side activities and distractions, works in its favour--Empire Bay feels like a real city, but it's transparently a backdrop for your story rather than an important character within it--it's not a sandbox for you to mess around in.. It looks much better, and tells a far more original tale than Mafia II, although it's also held back by some unfortunate gameplay problems (in GameSpot's original review , reviewer Scott Butterworth identified that there was "something undeniably special" about the game, but stated that the "core gameplay, though occasionally satisfying, feels dated").. In this sense, it's far more modern than the game Mafia II which came out six years before it--even if it's not as enjoyable to play.. Mafia II remains a compelling, interesting, and enjoyable game in 2010, despite being compromised somewhat by the ways in which it has aged.
This crime epic is still worth playing today.
It's a lavish gangster spectacle with some of the best world-building on PC.. (Image credit: 2K) (opens in new tab)In 1945, Vito returns to Empire Bay on leave.. And the level of fine detail is remarkable throughout.. (Image credit: 2K) (opens in new tab)It didn't take me long to fall in love with Mafia 2.. Dean Martin's Christmas classic Let It Snow plays as he walks the streets, still in his uniform, suitcase in hand.. It's a wonderful piece of scene-setting—something this game is obscenely good at all the way through.. Six years later, Vito emerges from prison to find a very different Empire Bay.. (Image credit: 2K) (opens in new tab)Looking back, it's the smaller, quieter moments in Mafia 2 that have really stuck with me over the years.
